Over the past sixty years, the Germany Alumni Chapter, chartered on June 3, 1964 as the first outside the Continental United States, has promoted achievement through events like the Black and White Ball, hosting the first official Grand Polemarch visit outside the U.S., and contributing to the Northeastern Province’s international prominence.

Over the past sixty years the Germany Alumni Chapter has made honoring and promoting achievement a goal of its long-term action plan. The following vignettes capture the commitment to that goal.

Chapter Formation
The Germany Alumni Chapter, chartered on June 3, 1964 as the Germany Alumni Association, was the first chapter outside the Continental United States and helped elevate the Northeastern Province to international prominence.
Inaugural Black and White Ball
The Association held its first Black and White Ball on May 29, 1965 in Kaiserslautern, Germany, marking the conclusion of its first anniversary.
Historic Grand Polemarch Visit
The Germany Alumni Association made history by hosting the first official Grand Polemarch visit outside the U.S., highlighted by the Thirteenth Annual Black and White Ball at Schwetzingen Castle, a courtesy call to General George Blanchard, and an AFV-TV interview aired across West Germany.

Founder Edward G. Irvin's Visit (August 1980)

Founder Edward G. Irvin visited West Germany, speaking at the Sixteenth Annual Black and White Ball, touring a major German university, meeting prominent Black generals in Europe, appearing on Armed Forces Network TV, and riding the "Kappa Soul Train" during his 13-day visit.

Honored Guests (1985-1987)

The Germany Alumni Chapter hosted several distinguished brothers, including the Honorable Walter Fauntroy, the late Judge George Crockett, and Congressman John Conyers.

Dr. Tilghman L. Moore’s Visit (November 1999)

The Chapter welcomed Dr. Tilghman L. Moore, Northeastern Province Polemarch, marking the first visit of a Northeastern Polemarch to the Western Europe Chapter, where he pinned new members and presented their membership certificates.

Community Engagement and Fundraising Efforts

  • The chapter began 2006 with its largest annual picnic turnout in years and donated $1,000 to the Grand Chapter’s Hurricane Relief drive. This was one of their busiest years, featuring more social events and fundraisers than the previous six years, including participation in the Delta Fall Step Show and the US Army Garrison Heidelberg’s Christmas Parade.

Expanded Christmas Social and Scholarship Fundraising

The chapter expanded its Christmas Social to include members, families, friends, and supporters, while also hosting its first Christmas Raffle with grand prizes such as a Dell Laptop, $1,000, and a stay at Edelweiss Lodge. Additionally, the chapter held its first March Madness Bowling tournament, which raised enough funds to provide four $1,000 scholarships.
Highlights
in 2006 and 2007

In 2006, the Germany Alumni Chapter doubled its scholarship funding from the previous year, contributing a total of $8,000 to students, the highest amount raised in over a decade!

The chapter concluded 2006 with its Annual Scholarship Ball, featuring Brigadier General Dennis L. Via as the keynote speaker. The 2006 Brother of the Year award was presented to Brother Kimberly Durr, with 210 members, guests, and friends in attendance. The chapter doubled its scholarship funds from the previous year, contributing a total of $8,000 to deserving Department of Defense Schools Seniors, marking one of its most dynamic years

The year 2007 began with over 60 members, families, and friends participating in the chapter picnic in August. The chapter established a new tradition of attending the annual Stuttgart Cannstatter-Volksfest as a chapter event in September, fostering community engagement and camaraderie.

In December 2007, the chapter held its annual Christmas Social and Raffle at the Zum Ritter hotel, featuring five enticing prizes, including a $1,000 grand prize and a trip to Paris for two. This event raised a remarkable $4,400, making it the best single fundraiser in the last five years, demonstrating the chapter’s dedication to community support.

Lieutenant General (RET) Andrew P. Chambers gave the keynote address for the 2007 Annual Scholarship Ball. The 2007 Brother of the Year award was presented to Brother Howard “Donny” Moorer. 225 members, guest, and friends from Europe and the United States were in attendance. In keeping with the theme “Aiding Tomorrow’s Professionals in the Pursuit of Achievement”, the Germany Alumni Chapter awarded eight scholarships totaling $12,500 to deserving Department of Defense Schools Seniors. This was a $4,500 increase from the previous year and a new high for the support to the military communities in Europe.

The Germany Alumni Chapter continues its commitment to honoring and promoting achievement in every field of human endeavor, in service to the community, our country and the Fraternity as we approach a promising future.
